Tips to save on your heating bill this winter

Now that winter is in full swing, you may have noticed that dreaded heating bill continues to climb. There are many tricks to keeping your house warm that can save you some cash. Here are a few of our top tips.

Service your furnace

The last thing anyone living above the 49th parallel wants to deal with in the dead of winter is a furnace breaking down. Also, if your furnace isn’t performing at its best, it could be costing you more than it should. As we enter our coldest months of the year, protect yourself against an unexpected breakdown and added heating expenses by calling an Expert to make sure your furnace is working at its highest efficiency.

Close your vents

Dads are notorious for saying “Close the door; I’m not paying to heat the outdoors!” It is just as wasteful to heat rooms that aren’t being used. Your furnace works harder for every room it needs to heat, so it pays to close vents in rooms that aren’t being used often.

Use a smart thermostat

As we mentioned in a previous article 6 Tips To Transform Your Home Into A Smart Home, smart thermostats are a great way to increase your efficiency. They are not only great because you can program them to your smartphones, but they track when you come and go to tailor your heating cycles as well as monitor the humidity and temperature to keep it at all working at an optimal level.

Open your blinds

We may not get too much sun in the winter here in Vancouver, but we can still absorb some of its heat during the day. Make sure to open your blinds—especially your south-facing windows—to let in as much natural heat as possible.

Seal your windows

Just like windows are a great way to bring in natural heat from the sun, it can be very easy to lose heat if your windows and trim are old. If you can’t afford to fully replace your windows, hire an Expert to offer some assistance in closing in those gaps. It can be as simple as some additional caulking in some areas or having a temporary winter sealing product applied to your windows.

Use your fireplace

We aren’t all lucky enough to have fireplaces, but if you do, it is a crime for you not to use it every chance you get in the winter. Not only does it save you money, but it also heats up immediately and creates a cozy environment to cuddle up in and pretend you are at a ski chalet for the weekend. Just remember to have your flues cleaned and checked by an Expert before you light that first fire.

Remember blankets

And while you’re cuddling up in front of the fire, don’t forget the blankets. I hate to admit it, but our parents were on to something when they told us to put on a sweater or grab a blanket when we complained about being cold. Plus, it just naturally makes me more comfortable and happier to be wrapped in a blanket when I’m trying to forget about the dropping temperatures outside.

Even if you only do a couple of these things you are bound to save a bit of dough this year. And remember, our HeyBryan Experts are always here to help you get those tasks done around the house.
