Holiday parties are always memorable whether it’s an ugly Christmas sweater party with friends, or a traditional gathering for the entire family. Keeping everyone warm and safe is important so here are heating tips for holiday parties for the three most popular heat sources in your home – your furnace, fireplace and space heaters.
Have your furnace checked and cleaned annually by a HeyBryan heating, air conditioning and ventilation (HVAC) Expert to ensure that it’s operating safely and efficiently. A fresh furnace filter will also capture dust and debris from recycling through your home.
Set your furnace thermostat to the right temperature depending on how many people are coming to your holiday party – and if doors or windows will be opened frequently. This is also a good time to put fresh batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors so they’re working well too.
A roaring fire adds a lovely ambiance to a holiday party and helps to heat your home. Gas fireplaces should be inspected and cleaned annually to remove cobwebs and dust and ensure that gas lines and the fan work well.
Traditional fireplaces need chimney cleaning about every 50 fires to avoid build-up and avoid a chimney fire. Choose environment-friendly fire logs for a clean, safe burn and never use pressure-treated or painted wood for logs or kindling as the chemicals and oils may be flammable.
Place a fire screen in front of the fire to keep children and pets at a safe distance, as well as block sparks from flying onto the floor. Keep holiday decorations such as stockings away from the fireplace hearth and mantel so they don’t catch fire.
Space heater safety
Space heaters are a great way to provide supplementary heating for your holiday party but can pose a major fire hazard or cause an electrical shock if not used properly. Choose a space heater that has an automatic shut-off switch if it overheats or tips over. Newer models also have a timer so they shut off automatically after a certain period.
A space heater should be placed on a level floor and at least three feet away from anything that’s combustible such as clothing, furnishings, bedding, curtains, books or papers. Keep away from high traffic areas where people or pets might accidentally knock it over. Only plug a space heater directly into an electrical outlet and not into an extension cord in case it overheats which could cause a fire.
Don’t use a space heater anywhere near water such as in a bathroom, and never leave a space heater unattended.
