With summer a fond memory and fall chillin’ on your doorstep, make the decor seasonal switch inside and out to welcome the crisp, cool change. Thanksgiving is on Monday, October 14 this year if you plan to celebrate with family and friends. Mull over these ideas while you’re enjoying a pumpkin spice latte or apple cider to get your home ready to welcome them.
Front door and gates
Decorate your front door or garden gates with a fresh wreath of autumn leaves, pine cones, twigs and berries.

Front door mat
Buy a new front door mat and boot tray that speaks to the season – and helps get dirt off boots and shoes. Consider a boot scraper that comes in the shape of an animal such as a hedgehog or porcupine.
Fireplace mantel and shelves
Adorn your living or family room mantel or shelves with a fresh set of candles in white, rust orange, sage green and deep purple. Set the candles in jam jars and bottles for a harvest look. Place pine cones, pheasant feathers, acorns and chestnuts on top of ferns nearby. Hang a banner garland that reads “Thankful”, “Grateful” or “Blessed” along the front of the mantel.

Replace planter flowers
Replace the plants and flowers you have in urns and plant holders with fall flowers such as traditional mums – an iconic choice of the season. Colour options range from white and yellow to orange and purple so there’s bound to be a colour that suits your exterior. If you prefer simulated plants, consider polyester or plastic options that won’t fade in the rain or sun.
Book a HeyBryan Expert who does garden or landscaping work if urns are heavy, planters are hanging in places that require a ladder or window boxes are on a second floor.
Patio or porch furniture cushions
For porch and patio furniture items that get to stay out a bit longer, swap out cushions and pillows that feature summer colours and patterns with autumn hues and motifs.
Table linens
Tablecloths, table runners, placemats and napkins are all available in fall colours so dress up your next meal for family and friends.

Table centrepieces
Create a dining table or coffee table centrepiece with a bowl of gourds, harvest corn and mini pumpkins. Leave them natural or spray paint them in colours that match your decor.
Advent-style calendar of Thanks
Create an Advent-style calendar of the days leading up to Thanksgiving (like people do for Christmas). Use leaves as the covers and behind each leaf write a note about something to be thankful for. As each leaf is lifted off, more notes are on display.
Create a family tree
Create a tree of your family’s ancestry. Use a small tree-like plant with many branches. Write names on cards of your family members and hang them on the tree.
Decorative pillows, blankets and towels
Swap out some of your ordinary living room, bedroom and bathroom pillows, cushions, blankets and towels for items in autumn colours, tartans, lumberjack plaids or patterns and motifs of the season.
